You know when you just got a feeling something bad is going to happen? and you are just waiting around with this gut feeling that "I am going to make a really dumb mistake". Well everyone, it happened. It finally happened and it took exactly 12 days.
I will begin with the the bike rental.
After checking my health app on my iphone, I noticed there was this huge spike in the number of steps I was making from exactly on the day I arrived in Copenhagen. It turns out I am a lazy bum at home because I was now walking over 12 miles a day in Copenhagen!
I am not walking 12 miles a day, so I decided to officially become Danish and rent a bike.
Ironically, I was reminded that day that the number one crime in Copenhagen is bike theft...See where I am going with this?
Upon LOCKING my bike at the metro at Amager Central, I made sure to check my surroundings and continue my way onto the metro towards Norreport for my classes. After having a great day in class, I returned to Amager Central in a wonderful mood and bought some fresh produce and flowers from a farmers stand next door. I turned around, walked toward the bike rack, and...my bike was missing.
After frantically searching for my bike and pitching the "Copenhagen is the world's happiest city" idea out of my head, I walked 15 minutes home feeling defeated and very confused.
2 insurance claims, a police report, 468$ later, the reality of the situation really sunk in.
Fast forward 2 weeks and I get a text from my friend Caroline saying, "I found your bike".
Extremely confused and in disbelief I ran to Amager Central to see what she was actually talking about and there it was...right where I left it... locked and all in the exact same spot I left it.
Lesson: Make sure you check where exactly you park your bike relative to the entrance AND exit of the metro.
On the bright side, I now own an obnoxiously bright purple bike. And it comes with a basket.
